1. The engine fails to start or stalls after starting
If the timing belt is broken or badly worn, the engine may fail to start or stall soon after starting.
2. The engine makes unusual noises
If you hear a constant ticking or clicking noise while the engine is running, this may be caused by a worn or incorrectly tensioned timing belt.
3. Reduced engine performance
A worn timing belt may cause reduced engine performance, which may manifest as weak acceleration, lack of power, or increased fuel consumption.
4. Abnormal exhaust
If there is a problem with the timing belt, it may cause incomplete engine combustion, resulting in abnormal exhaust smoke such as black, white, or blue smoke.
5. The engine shakes or runs rough
If the timing belt is worn or broken, the engine may shake or run rough.
6. Drop in oil pressure
A faulty timing belt may cause a drop in oil pressure because the oil pump is driven by the crankshaft, and the synchronization of the crankshaft and the camshaft depends on the timing belt.
7. Piston or valve damage
In the worst case, if the timing belt breaks, it may cause the piston to collide with the valve, causing serious engine damage.
8. Check engine fault light on
Timing belt problems may cause the engine fault light to illuminate, indicating that there is a potential problem with the engine.
9. Coolant leak
If the timing belt cover is cracked or damaged, coolant may leak, which will not only reduce the efficiency of the cooling system, but may also cause the timing belt to slip or damage.
10. Unsteady engine idle
When the engine is idling, if the timing belt is worn or loose, it may cause the engine to idle erratically, which is manifested as engine shaking or speed fluctuations.
