How to adjust the conveyor belt to the center position?

Feb 02, 2026

I. Preparation and Inspection Before Adjustment

Safety First: Always stop the machine and disconnect the power. Hang warning signs to prevent misoperation.

Preliminary Inspection:

Direction of Deviation: Determine which side the conveyor belt is deviating to (left/right).

Deviation Pattern: Observe whether the deviation is throughout the entire length or localized (e.g., deviation only at the rollers).

Relationship between Deviation and Tension: Check whether the belt deviates to the same side under both no-load and heavy-load conditions. This is related to the subsequent adjustment principle.

II. Core Adjustment Methods and Steps
Based on the cause of deviation, select the corresponding method:

Method 1: Adjusting the Idler Roller Set (Most Commonly Used)

Principle: Correcting deviation by changing the direction of force on the idler roller set.

Operation (Applicable to deviation in the load-bearing section):
If the conveyor belt deviates to the right, move the right-side idler roller set forward along the conveyor belt's running direction, or move the left-side idler roller set backward.

If the conveyor belt deviates to the left, move the left idler group forward in the running direction, or move the right idler group backward.

Key Points: Adjustments should be small (a few millimeters) each time. After adjustment, observe the effect by running the conveyor and make repeated fine adjustments.

Mnemonic: "Runs backward, not forward"-If the idler bracket is not installed perpendicular to the running direction, the conveyor belt will deviate towards the rear end, requiring adjustment of the idler position.

Method Two: Adjusting the Rollers (Critical Position)

Principle: A roller axis not perpendicular to the center line will cause belt deviation.

Operation (Applicable to deviation at the head/tail rollers):

Head Drive Roller: If the conveyor belt deviates to the right, move the right bearing housing forward; if it deviates to the left, move the left bearing housing forward.

Tail Redirecting Roller: Adjust in the opposite direction to the head roller.

Key Points: After adjustment, use a level or laser to calibrate and ensure the roller axis is perpendicular to the conveyor center line.

Method 3: Adjusting the Tensioning Device

Principle: Uneven tension causes the conveyor belt to deviate towards the slack side.

Operation: If the belt deviates to the same side under both no-load and heavy-load conditions, it indicates a difference in tension on both sides. Follow the principle of "tightening rather than loosening": Adjust the tensioning mechanism (screw or counterweight) to tighten the slack side and loosen the tight side until the tension on both sides is consistent.

Key Point: After adjustment, check whether the tension of the conveyor belt on both sides of the roller is uniform.

Method 4: Installing Self-Aligning Idler Sets (Automatic Correction)

Principle: Utilizes the lateral thrust of self-aligning idlers to automatically correct belt deviation.

Operation: Install self-aligning idler sets (such as center-shaft type, four-link type, vertical roller type) in the deviation area.

Applicable to: Short-distance conveyors or situations where belt deviation is not severe; use with caution on long-distance conveyors to avoid affecting the conveyor belt's lifespan.

Key Points: Self-aligning idler sets can achieve automatic deviation correction, but their working status needs to be checked regularly.

III. Testing and Verification After Adjustment

No-load Test Run: Start the conveyor belt and observe whether it deviates, checking for any abnormal noise or vibration.

Load Test Run: Gradually load to the rated load and observe the operating status and deviation.

Final Inspection: After stopping the machine, check whether the conveyor belt joints, idlers, and rollers are loose or worn.

IV. Precautions

Safety First: Always stop the machine and disconnect the power during adjustment, and wear appropriate protective equipment.

Gradual Fine-tuning: Each adjustment should not be too large to avoid over-adjustment.

Comprehensive Judgment: Deviation is often the result of multiple factors acting together, requiring comprehensive analysis based on the site conditions.

Regular Maintenance: Establish a regular inspection system, promptly clean any material adhering to the rollers and idlers, and check the wear condition of the conveyor belt.
