I. Mild Aging: Maintenance and Repair Measures
When a PVC conveyor belt only shows surface discoloration, slight cracks, or localized wear, it indicates that aging is in its early stages. The following methods can extend its service life:
1. Surface Cleaning and Protection: Use a neutral detergent to remove oil and dust, then wipe with industrial alcohol and dry. A layer of anti-aging protective agent (such as a protective coating containing UV absorbers) can be applied to the surface to slow down the oxidation process.
2. Localized Damage Repair: For scratches, small holes (diameter <3cm), or short cracks (length <5cm), cold repair with polymer rubber repair materials can be performed:
After stopping the machine, clean the damaged area, removing debris and oil stains; Use 80-120 grit sandpaper to sand the damaged edges outwards by 3-5cm to increase adhesion; Apply a special repair adhesive (such as cold vulcanizing adhesive), smooth the surface, and cure at room temperature for 2-4 hours; After repair, run the conveyor belt unloaded for 10-15 minutes to confirm there are no abnormalities before gradually loading.
3. Emergency Reinforcement Treatment: If the crack is long but replacement is not possible immediately, holes can be drilled along both sides of the crack and connected with metal clips, or guide strips can be added for support as a temporary solution.
II. Moderate to Severe Aging: Replacement Recommended to Avoid Risks
When a conveyor belt exhibits the following conditions, repair cannot restore its performance, and continued use will pose a high risk:
1. Large-area surface cracking, powdering, or delamination;
2. The belt body becomes noticeably hardened and loses elasticity, cracking easily with slight bending;
3. Tensile deformation exceeds 5%, with a tendency to tear at the joints;
4. Frequent deviation, slippage, or breakage under normal load.
In this case, the machine should be stopped immediately, and a new conveyor belt should be replaced. Prolonged use of aged PVC belts beyond their service life may lead to sudden breakage, causing equipment damage, material spillage, or even personal injury.
III. Replacement Selection and Installation Recommendations
To avoid repeated aging issues, the following should be noted during replacement:
1. Choose a model with stronger weather resistance: such as aging-resistant PVC conveyor belts with added UV-resistant components, or switch to PU material for outdoor environments;
2. Match operating conditions: Select heat-resistant types (T1/T2/T3) for high-temperature environments, and mildew-resistant skeleton layers for humid locations;
3. Standardized installation and commissioning: Ensure roller alignment and appropriate tension to avoid accelerated wear of the new belt due to improper installation.
IV. Preventing Aging: Extending Service Life from the Source
1. Avoid direct sunlight: Install sunshades or conveyor covers for outdoor use;
2. Control operating temperature: Avoid prolonged operation in environments above 80℃;
3. Regular inspection and maintenance: Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the belt condition every 1-2 years and establish a replacement cycle record;
4. Use high-quality raw materials: Prioritize products made from virgin materials with a robust belt fabric structure to avoid premature aging caused by inferior recycled materials.
