How to Properly Clean a PVC Conveyor Belt?

Feb 23, 2026

I. Basic Cleaning Procedure (Applicable to Daily Cleaning)

1. Shut Down and Disconnect Power for Safety: Turn off the power to the equipment and hang a "Do Not Start" warning sign to prevent accidental operation.

2. Remove Large Surface Debris: Use a soft brush, scraper, or vacuum cleaner to remove dry residue and debris from the conveyor belt, paying special attention to material accumulation in the gaps between rollers and idlers, and at joints.

3. Wipe the Belt Surface with a Damp Cloth: Wipe the belt surface with a soft cloth or sponge dampened with 30–40℃ warm water. For minor oil stains, add a small amount of food-grade neutral detergent (5–8 ml per liter of water). Gently wipe in the direction of operation to avoid scratching.

4. Second Rinse and Dry: Remove detergent residue with a damp cloth, then wipe dry with a dry cloth or turn on a fan to accelerate drying and prevent bacterial growth or slippage.

II. Deep Cleaning and Disinfection (Weekly or After High Contamination)
When handling high-sugar, high-protein materials or when mold is found, deep treatment is required:

1. Complete Routine Cleaning Steps
Ensure no visible residue before proceeding with the disinfection process.

2. Use Compliant Disinfectant
Use 200ppm sodium hypochlorite solution or food-grade hydrogen peroxide solution to avoid the migration of harmful substances and meet FDA hygiene requirements.

3. Wipe Thoroughly and Allow to Set
Wipe the belt, edges, and overlapping areas evenly with a disinfectant cloth. Let it stand for 5–10 minutes to ensure sterilization effectiveness.

4. Thorough Rinse and Dry
Rinse off any residual disinfectant with sterile water. If necessary, use a UV lamp (1–1.5 meters away from the belt) for 30 minutes to enhance sterilization.

5. Special Treatment for Mold
If mold spots are found, first remove the surface mold with a soft brush, then soak and wipe with a neutral detergent, and ensure thorough drying to prevent recurrence.

III. Cleaning Precautions and Avoidance Guidelines

1. Strictly prohibit the use of strong acid or alkali cleaning agents: PVC material is not corrosion-resistant; strong acids and alkalis will cause surface cracking and deformation.

2. Control water temperature and pressure: The water temperature should not exceed 50℃. Avoid direct rinsing with a high-pressure water gun to prevent water from seeping into the joints or damaging the material.

3. Choose appropriate tools: Do not use hard-bristled brushes or metal scrapers. Soft cloths, sponges, nylon brushes, or old toothbrushes are recommended for cleaning hard-to-reach areas.

4. Exercise caution when cleaning in winter: PVC becomes brittle at low temperatures; handle with gentler force to prevent scratches or breakage.

5. Avoid high-temperature drying: Do not use hot air or direct sunlight for rapid drying to prevent material aging and deformation.

IV. Post-cleaning Maintenance Recommendations

1. Check the belt condition: After cleaning, check for scratches and wear, and repair them promptly to prevent dirt accumulation.

2. Clean transmission components simultaneously: Wipe the rollers, idlers, and supports to prevent secondary contamination.

3. Spare parts storage specifications: Store in a dry and ventilated place, away from oil and chemicals, and ventilate and prevent moisture regularly.
