What are the consequences of conveyor belt misalignment?

Apr 08, 2026

1. Equipment Damage: Accelerated Wear of Key Components
Misalignment causes abnormal contact between the conveyor belt and the frame, idler supports, etc., leading to:

Wear, cracking, or tearing of the conveyor belt edges, shortening its service life;

Abnormal stress on idler and roller bearings, causing shaft misalignment and bearing damage;

Increased wear on one side of the drive roller's rubber coating, reducing transmission efficiency.

Long-term misalignment can also cause more serious mechanical failures, such as belt breakage and motor overload burnout.

2. Material Spillage: Increased Costs and Environmental Pollution
When the belt deviates from its track, the material it carries is prone to spilling from the edges:

This causes raw material waste and production losses;
Spilled coal, mineral powder, etc., require manual cleaning, increasing labor intensity and management costs;
In enclosed spaces or cleanrooms, dust diffusion will pollute the production environment, violating environmental protection requirements.

When the lower conveyor belt misaligns, it may also carry spilled material back to the tail end of the machine, forming coal accumulation and affecting the function of the cleaner.

3. Safety Hazards: Potential for Fire or Personal Injury

Under certain operating conditions, belt misalignment poses an extremely high risk:

The continuous friction between the belt and the frame generates high temperatures, which can easily become an ignition source in flammable environments such as coal mines and chemical plants, potentially causing fires or even explosions;
Severe misalignment may cause the belt to roll over, tear, or detach, posing a direct safety threat to on-site operators;
Frequent triggering of the emergency stop device affects system stability and may also cause a chain reaction of shutdowns.

Special Reminder: The risk of frictional heat generation is even higher when using non-flame-retardant conveyor belts, requiring extra caution.

4. Production Interruption: Impact on Continuous Operation and Efficiency

When misalignment reaches a certain level, it will trigger the anti-misalignment emergency stop device, causing the entire production line to stop;
Troubleshooting and adjustments are time-consuming, resulting in unplanned production losses;
Frequent maintenance disrupts the production rhythm and reduces overall operational efficiency.

5. Covering up other faults: increasing the difficulty of maintenance. Misalignment is often a combination of multiple problems (such as installation errors, component aging). If only the symptoms are treated without eliminating the root cause, it will cover up the potential faults, making it difficult for the real problem to be discovered and repaired in a timely manner.
