How to tell if a PU conveyor belt needs to be replaced?

Aug 16, 2024

1. Surface wear
Carefully inspect the surface of the conveyor belt. If the PU material is severely worn, thinning, exposing the underlying fabric or wire, deep scratches and cracks, etc., it may need to be replaced. For example, when the surface wear causes the conveyed material to slip or get stuck easily, it indicates that the wear has affected its normal function.
2. Damage and cracks
Observe whether the conveyor belt has obvious longitudinal or transverse cracks, tears, perforations and other damage. Even small cracks, if they continue to expand, may be a signal that they need to be replaced. For example, when the crack runs through more than one-third of the width of the entire conveyor belt, it is usually necessary to consider replacement.
3. Deformation and elongation
Measure the length and width of the conveyor belt. If there is obvious elongation or deformation, which causes it to fail to operate normally on the roller or poorly cooperate with other parts, it may need to be replaced. For example, when the elongation exceeds a certain proportion and the tension adjustment cannot return to normal, a new conveyor belt needs to be replaced.
4. Joint condition
Check the joint part of the conveyor belt to see if there are signs of looseness, disengagement, damage or aging. Problems with the joints may affect the strength and operational stability of the conveyor belt. For example, if the joints burst or are severely worn, replacement should be considered.
5. Aging and hardening
PU materials may age, harden, and lose elasticity and flexibility after long-term use. Touch and bend the conveyor belt with your hands. If it feels too hard and is not easy to restore to its original state, it means that its performance has declined and may need to be replaced.
6. Conveying effect
Observe the conveying of materials on the conveyor belt. If there are frequent deviations, slippage, accumulation, or inability to convey smoothly, and they cannot be improved after adjustment, it may be that the conveyor belt can no longer meet the working requirements and needs to be replaced.
7. Operating noise and vibration
During normal operation, if the conveyor belt produces abnormal noise and violent vibration, it may be that there are serious problems with the conveyor belt, such as internal structural damage, uneven tension, etc., which may mean that it needs to be replaced.
8. Use time and work intensity
Consider the use time and work intensity of the conveyor belt. If it has exceeded the manufacturer's recommended service life or has been working in a high-load, harsh environment for a long time, even if there is no obvious damage on the surface, its performance should be evaluated and replacement should be considered to prevent potential failures.
