How to properly install a skirted conveyor belt?

Oct 03, 2025

1. Pre-installation Preparation
Inspect Equipment and Materials: Confirm that the specifications of the skirted conveyor belt (bandwidth, sidewall height, and material) are consistent with the design. Inspect the belt for damage and scratches. Prepare tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, and a vulcanizing machine (if splicing is required).
Cleaning and Measuring: Clean the conveyor frame to ensure it is free of debris. Measure the frame dimensions to match the conveyor belt. Adjust the roller spacing based on the material characteristics (e.g., a denser material for powders).
2. Belt Unfolding and Positioning
Segmented Unfolding: Long conveyor belts can be unfolded in sections to avoid twisting or folding, ensuring they lay flat in the conveying direction.
Roller and Roller Installation: Ensure the rollers rotate freely, the roller axis is perpendicular to the centerline of the frame, and the horizontality error is ≤±2mm to prevent deviation.
3. Joint Preparation
Mechanical Jointing (Quick Installation): Use a belt buckle to align the ends and secure. This is suitable for low-tension applications (such as PU belts in the food industry). Vulcanized Joint (High Strength): The belt ends are skived, coated with vulcanized rubber, and then pressurized and heated. The joint strength approaches that of the original belt, making it suitable for heavy loads (such as mining rubber belts).

4. Tensioning and Adjustment
Tension Control: Use the tensioning device to adjust the tension to a moderate value (droop ≤ 1% of the belt width when unloaded). Avoid excessive tension and wear, or excessive looseness and slippage.

Test Run Inspection: Run the belt unloaded for 30 minutes, observing the gap between the skirt and the belt (1-3mm). Adjust the sidewall height or roller angle to eliminate friction.
